March 28, 2024, Enfield, CT - In an era dominated by digital advancements and information circulating, the enduring presence of libraries in educational institutions might seem antiquated to some. However, contrary to popular belief, libraries remain an essential asset within school environments.

The value of a library in a school environment is immense and goes beyond just being a place with shelves full of books. It's used as a community space; a safe space; a praying space; even a space of culture. The library is known to be the heart and soul of the school.

Lisa Jordan, Comp Sci High’s beloved librarian, shared her thoughts about why the library matters to the school. With this, her intimate knowledge of the library's inner workings shined through. She indicated that “It fosters a sense of community because it's open to everyone in the school, it is not open just to kids who get good grades or only kids who have certain plans or kids who play a certain sport. It's open to everyone, it's welcoming to everyone.”

The library space in Comp Sci High is often used for hanging out with friends, having fun, or getting a nice snooze in; but it's also used to help kids with their homework, get guidance from the professionals who work there, capstone classes, or workshops. These activities bring people together, encouraging conversations and connections. It welcomes everyone regardless of their background. It's a place where people feel accepted and respected. It fosters a sense of belonging. In essence, it's not just about books. It's about the opportunity to open doors to new worlds; the expansion of our minds; connecting with others.

For some, the library is a safe and quiet place where they can study, work, or relax. This sense of safety encourages people to spend time there and build relationships with others. The library is a dynamic space that fosters intellectual curiosity, supports academic achievement, and cultivates a love for learning that extends far beyond the classroom.
